High wages and strong buying power

Switzerland is one of the most exclusive countries in Europe. In the bigger cities in particular, the cost of living is quite high compared with the rest of the world – but the quality of living, wages and buying power are also accordingly high. To buy one unit of an internationally available food requires less working time than in most comparable foreign locations.

Average household consumption expenditure

Rent and insurance are among the biggest expenses. Average earners spend between a quarter and a third of their income on rent. Add to that a number of insurance policies, with mandatory health insurance accounting for the largest portion: the monthly premium has risen steadily in recent years and now averages 5.6% of total basic monthly spending. Insurance premiums are not income-dependent, but vary depending on the health insurance company, place of residence, age and gender.
